Staff start to enjoy talking the stairs

Guy's and St Thomas' has been shortlisted for the 2013 Guardian Sustainable Business Awards in the category of Health and Well-being.

The Trust has been nominated for its leading and comprehensive health and wellbeing programme for its 13,000 staff members. The comprehensive initiative includes a wide range of benefits such as self-referral physiotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, employee nutritionist, general counselling, lunchtime walks, staff flu vaccination scheme, and weight loss support programme.

Since the programme launched: 110 staff members joined our Weight Watchers group (losing 40 stone in total in one year); 130 staff members were treated by a physiotherapist, 111 of which were self referrals; and 1,300 staff attended our road shows to learn more about the initiatives on offer to improve our staff's health and well-being.

Sustainability manager Alexandra Hammond said: "It’s excellent to be recognised for all the hard work the team has done to promote healthy living for staff at Guy’s and St Thomas’. We are the only healthcare organisation nominated in any category for these prestigious awards – something the Trust is really proud of.”

The Trust goes head to head against Sainsbury's for its Paralympics Sponsorship success and Turk Telekomün for its Employee Health Services project. The winner will be announced at a ceremony on 16 May at the Royal Institute of British Architects.

As one of the nominees for innovation and impact in corporate sustainability, the Trust’s  Health and Well-being programme will also be included in the Guardian's Best Practice Exchange, which will be part of a resource bank for sustainability professionals.
