Increasing activity

As part of our health and well-being programme, staff continue to step up to the Global Corporate Challenge. Inspired by the London 2012 Games, those taking part have walked over 700 million steps so far since the challenge started in May 2012.

The Challenge encourages participants to walk at least 10,000 steps a day.

We have over 1,000 staff taking part in the challenge and together we have:

  • a daily step average of 14,173
  • covered over 275,000 miles
  • burned over 28 million calories.

Staff have been motivated by the challenge with great success stories of increasing physical activity through walking and losing weight.

Harvey Birdie who works in our payroll department now walks from London Bridge to Lewisham twice a week, as well as occasionally doing eight mile walks at weekends.

Michelle D’Arcy, rewards and benefits manager, said: “The aim of the challenge was to increase our physical activity and with the feel good factor from London 2012, participants are really making a fantastic effort to achieve 10,000 steps a day.  I think the healthy competition has made it fun, we have just four weeks until the end of the challenge and we look forward to seeing who will top the Guy's and St Thomas' leaderboard...keep walking!"
