Helping to diagnose patients with dementia

Most people suffering from dementia do not have a diagnosis and therefore fail to receive the support and care they need.

To help tackle this, the NHS has introduced a national screening target to ensure that more cases of dementia are identified when patients come into hospital, helping both them and those who care for them.

What's the standard?

We are expected to ask at least 90% of people over 75 years old admitted to our hospitals the following question: have you had a problem with your memory over the past 12 months that has been affecting your day-to-day life?

Those who answer yes, and who are happy to do so, are then asked to complete a short test. We also let their GP know so that they can find out more about the patient's needs when they leave hospital.

How are we doing?

Our recent performance:

  • December 2019 – 64.2% of patients screened for dementia
  • November – 73.3%
  • October – 70.7%.

We place great importance on providing excellent care to our most vulnerable patients, including those with dementia. We have a special dementia and delirium (DaD) team to help us to do this, as well as a training programme that ensures all our staff understand the needs of patients with dementia.

How you can help us

If you are the relative or carer of a patient with known dementia, please speak to the staff caring for your relative to discuss completing a ‘This is me’ document. This will allow our staff to provide the best possible care.

Dementia Friends

All staff at Guy’s and St Thomas’ have been recognised as Dementia Friends by the Alzheimer’s Society.

Dementia Friends is an Alzheimer’s Society initiative, aimed at raising awareness of dementia for one million people in England and encouraging them to change one thing to help people living with dementia.

John's Campaign

Our Dementia and Delirium (DaD) team are promoting the support of carers and involving them in patient care. They provide a 'Carer's Passport’ that enables carers to be actively involved in the care of their relative. The team have joined the national campaign called John's Campaign who promote carer support and involvement.
