Applying to be a volunteer
You can apply for a volunteer role that is currently available.
Please read the role description carefully to make sure you have the skills the role requires and you are available for the days and times required.
To apply, fill out an application form (Word 124Kb) and email it to firstname.lastname@example.org. If you are applying for more than one role, put them in order of preference on the form.
If you do not have access to a computer or would prefer a paper copy to be sent to you please contact voluntary services and we will be happy to arrange this. You can email us or telephone on 020 7188 1658 or 020 7188 8399.
We will send you confirmation that we have received your form.
Please note not every applicant is successful as we aim to ensure there is a good match between the role you are applying for and what you would like to gain from volunteering for us. This is why it is important that you provide us with as much relevant information as possible in your application form.
How long does the recruitment process take?
The process can take between six to 12 weeks before you start volunteering. This will depend on how quickly you fill in and return the necessary forms. It also depends on how long important stages of the recruitment process take, such as receiving your references and police clearance.
When we have received sufficient application forms for a role we will close recruitment. Application forms are then shortlisted following set criteria. If you are shortlisted you will be invited for an interview with the voluntary services team and a representative of the department you will be volunteering for.
If you are not shortlisted you will be informed.
Interviews normally take place in small informal groups. It is a chance for us to get to know you and for you to find out more about the role. If we decide you will be right for the role and you decide it is right for you we can then start the process of the checks you require before you are able to start volunteering.
To safeguard our patients and volunteers there are a number of checks we need you to undertake:
- police check: all volunteers are required to undergo a police check. The level of check will depend on the role you will be doing. We will ask you to complete a form which is sent off to the Disclosure and Baring Service (DBS).
When they have completed their checks a certificate will be sent to your home address. We do not receive a copy of this certificate so you will need to provide us with a copy for our records. We are unable to accept DBS certificates from other organisations.
- reference: on the application form we ask you to provide us details of people who can provide a reference for you. They should not be family or friends and ideally they should know you in a professional capacity for example employer, teacher or tutor. We will take up these references if you are offered a placement after the interview.
- occupational health screening: as you will be in direct contact with patients all volunteers will need to undergo occupational health screening. Initially this is a screening form which you complete and send back to occupational health. Once this form is assessed they will inform you if you are fit to volunteer or if you require a new starter check appointment. The majority of volunteers do require a new starter check appointment because occupational health will need to check your immunisation levels and may give you immunisations that are required for the role. New starter check appointments are only offered Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm. If you are not able to attend this appointment we are not able to offer you a volunteer placement.
All volunteers are required to attend a volunteer induction session. These are held at regular intervals throughout the year. The induction session will run from 9.15am to 3.30pm on a weekday. You will be invited to attend an induction nearest to the date you are going to start volunteering or just after you have started.
On your first day a local induction is arranged with the department you will be volunteering for.
Some roles may require additional specialist training and you will be advised about this if required.
First day and follow up
Once all your checks are through we will arrange a mutually convenient start date with you and the department you will be volunteering for.
On your first day a member of the voluntary services team will meet you. They will issue you with your ID badge and provide you with a volunteer jacket if you are required to wear one for the role. They will go with you to the area you are volunteering to introduce you to the person who will be doing your local induction.
You will be treated as an integral member of the department you are volunteering for. Voluntary services will contact you regularly to see how the placement is going and you can contact us at any time if you have any queries or concerns.
