A hospital catering manager has run and cycled 500 miles to raise more than £5,000 for a special machine that could help save the lives of children being treated at Evelina London Children's Hospital.

Gavin Tiffin achieved his epic 500-mile target on Saturday (14 June) when he crossed the finishing line of the 62-mile (100 km) Biel running race in Switzerland in just 11 hours and 31 minutes.

Gavin, 34, began his epic challenge in September 2012. He has already completed four marathons and a three-day bike ride from London to Paris.

He says: "It can be tough training day in, day out, in the wind and the rain. I have run 100 km, burnt 10,000 calories, lost 12 litres of sweat and climbed 800 metres of hills but it's worth it if it leads to a better life for children and their families.”

Money raised by Gavin will help buy a Tandem Mass Spectrometer. The machine will allow experts to detect inherited diseases in newborn babies in just 15 minutes and monitor their condition afterwards. Treating children quickly after diagnosis can save lives and prevent disability.

Gavin is supported by Together we can, the charity that fundraises for Guy’s and St Thomas’.
