Four projects that have transformed care for patients are in the running for the prestigious Building Better Healthcare Awards.

The projects have been led by Essentia, Guy’s and St Thomas’ in-house capital, estates facilities and IT directorate.

The projects and categories are:

The lodge provides a home from home, creating a safe and relaxing environment for patients who don’t need to be cared for on inpatient wards, but who need to be close to the hospital before or after clinical procedures.

  • Communication and IT: e-Noting

e-Noting digitally captures clinical notes and replaces many paper records and documents. It was built by our in-house team to improve patient safety and ensure easy access to patient notes.

  • Communication and IT: KHP Online

Working with colleagues across King’s Health Partners (KHP), we developed a new portal so that clinicians at the three partner trusts could share patient information quickly and securely. Guy’s and St Thomas’ provided the technical expertise to support the development.

  • Sustainable design: Guy’s Tower re-cladding

The refurbishment of Guy’s Tower involved replacing every window, repairing damaged concrete and applying 8,000m² of bespoke aluminium cladding to the outside of the 34-storey landmark building. One of the key aims of the project was to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.

Steve McGuire, Director of Essentia, says: “It is great to have been recognised for these important projects, which are part of our ongoing commitment to improve our facilities for our patients.”

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony hosted by Welsh TV presenter Gethin Jones on 4 November.
