Keeping Guy's and St Thomas' smoke-free

Painted red boundary lines which say ‘No smoking beyond this line’ have been introduced at Guy’s and St Thomas’.

The lines, which are in addition to existing ‘No smoking’ signs at the Trust, send a clear message to visitors that smoking, including the use of e-cigarettes, is not allowed anywhere on its grounds.

Dame Eileen Sills, Chief Nurse at Guy’s and St Thomas’, says: “We banned smoking 18 months ago but it has been a challenge to keep our hospitals and community health centres smoke-free.

“We are asking members of the public to respect the fact that you cannot smoke when entering our premises. This includes not only our buildings but also our grounds.

“If you are smoking and are approached by a member of our staff to ask you to stub out your cigarette, please understand they are just doing their job. We are also encouraging our patients to consider nicotine replacement therapies which are offered to them when they are admitted to hospital.

“Stopping smoking is the single biggest thing you can do to improve your health. By quitting you can significantly reduce your risk of many cancers, heart problems and other serious conditions.

“We know that giving up smoking can be tough, which is why we are committed to giving patients and visitors the support they need to quit smoking.”
