‘5 ways to a healthier YOU’, the health and well-being programme for staff at Guy’s and St Thomas’, has been highly commended in the new Public Health Minister’s Award.

Public Health Minister Jane Ellison recognised the Trust for its efforts in improving the health of its workforce.

Our ‘5 ways to a healthier YOU’ programme covers a wide range of health and well-being benefits to support staff including fully equipped on-site gyms, a dedicated staff physiotherapist, and advice for smokers wanting to kick the habit.

The new Public Health Minister’s Award has been developed jointly by the Department of Health and the Royal Society for Public Health.

Jane Ellison says: “A person’s health has a massive impact on their working and personal life and it is vital that employers recognise this.

“Supporting people to make even small lifestyle changes can make a big difference to well-being and I was really impressed by the shortlisted nominations for this award.”

Shirley Cramer CBE, Chief Executive of the Royal Society for Public Health, adds: “With sickness absence and worklessness as a result of ill health costing the UK economy an estimated £100 billion a year, it is crucial the workplace is regarded as a key setting in which to improve and promote health.

"I want to extend my congratulations to all of the nominees who demonstrated innovation, leadership and a sustained commitment to improving employee wellbeing.”

Ann Macintyre, Director of Workforce at Guy's and St Thomas', says: "We have evidence from patient and staff surveys that '5 ways to a healthier YOU' programme is not only helping to improve the health and wellbeing of our staff but also enabling them to provide better care for our patients.

“We are promoting all the support that is available to staff so they can make healthy lifestyle choices to stay fit and well, have less sickness absence from work, provide better continuity of care for patients, and promote healthy living to our patients. I am delighted that this work has been highly commended by the Minister."
