Chief Nurse Eileen Sills has been shortlisted as this year’s ‘flu fighter champion’ for England and Wales.

The NHS Employers flu fighter awards recognise the individual members of staff, teams and NHS trusts that have really made a difference to fighting flu.

Despite her busy day job leading a workforce of more than 5,000 nurses and ensuring patients have the best possible experience under the Trust’s care, Eileen ran her own vaccination sessions to give hundreds of staff the flu jab. She also led the Trust’s campaign to raise staff awareness of getting vaccinated.

Eileen says: “I’m thrilled to be shortlisted as a flu fighter champion. I hope it will reinforce just how important it is that staff, particularly those who are directly involved in patient care, get vaccinated against flu to ensure we have a workforce fit to provide care for our patients. We also want to prevent the spread of infection to our vulnerable patients.”

A total of 6,234 staff got the flu jab through vaccination programmes run at Guy’s and St Thomas’ from October to December last year.

Eileen adds: “I really enjoyed meeting a whole range of staff at the vaccination clinics. People from all areas, both clinical and non-clinical got the jab, which is great as it is everybody’s responsibility.”
