An innovative programme to save energy – and money – has won a top national accolade.

Staff from Essentia, Guy’s and St Thomas’ capital, estates and facilities directorate which also provides services for other organisations, won the energy efficiency category at this week’s Health Service Journal Value in Healthcare.

Their programme helps NHS trusts and public sector organisations across the UK to improve energy efficiency and avoid waste.

At Guy’s and St Thomas’ the project is saving a minimum of £1 million a year while reducing carbon emissions. The award judges said Essentia’s project was a glimpse of the future.

Jason Stanton, programme manager for Essentia Trading, says: “We are delighted to win this award which recognises how we are making energy efficiency a reality for over a dozen NHS trusts across the UK, including Guy’s and St Thomas’.

“Our energy performance contract framework is quickly becoming the ‘go-to’ solution for NHS trusts that really want to address energy savings and reduce their impact on the environment.”

King’s Health Partners, our Academic Health Science Centre, won the value and improvement in financial services category of the awards for joining up financial and quality information in value-based reporting. Judges said the project was a great example with excellent patient involvement.

Two other Guy’s and St Thomas’ services were also shortlisted for the awards - the musculoskeletal clinical assessment triage and treatment service (MCATTS) and the wellbeing and self-care service for vulnerable refugees and asylum seekers in Lambeth.

The Health Service Journal Value in Healthcare Awards showcase outstanding efficiency and improvement in the NHS, recognise excellent use of resources, and seek out examples of demonstrable improvement in outcomes.
