Staff who treat patients suffering from painful muscle and joint conditions and a service for vulnerable refugees and asylum seekers have been shortlisted for a top national awards scheme.

Health Service Journal magazine’s Value in Healthcare Awards recognise outstanding efficiency and improvement by the NHS.

Deputy Editor Emma Maier says: "Being shortlisted means that your organisation has been specifically chosen as a leader in the field. You are achieving both service improvement and outstanding efficiency – a vital balance that is more important than ever before."

Medical technology

The musculoskeletal clinical assessment triage and treatment service (MCATTS) has been shortlisted for redesigning its injection service.

Most patients needing a pain relieving injection have it done by an MCATTS physiotherapist at their initial appointment or soon afterwards.

However, some patients need their injection to be guided by an ultrasound scan. The scan shows where the needle is to ensure that it is in exactly the right place. Previously, these procedures were carried out by radiologists with a waiting time of up to 15 weeks.

The physiotherapists have access to ultrasound equipment and have now been trained to be able to give ultrasound-guided injections. This will mean patients wait less time for treatment.

Clinical support services

The wellbeing and self-care service helps vulnerable refugees and asylum seekers in Lambeth who have lived in pain for more than six months. Most of these people have suffered traumatic experiences in their country of origin.

The service, the first of its kind in the NHS, helps these very vulnerable people to reduce their dependency on painkillers and find new ways of coping with extreme anxiety.

People are helped to overcome their chronic pain with physical therapy such as massage, stretching and breathing exercises.

The service has helped more than 1,700 vulnerable people who suffer with long-term pain since it was established in 2004.

Energy efficiency

Essentia, Guy’s and St Thomas’ capital, estates and facilities directorate which also provides services for other NHS trusts and commercial customers, has been shortlisted for its energy performance contracts (EPCs).

The EPCs support NHS trusts and other UK public sector organisations to improve energy efficiency, water management, reduce carbon emissions, and reduce waste.

At Guy’s and St Thomas’ the EPC is saving a minimum of £1 million a year while reducing carbon emissions.
