Making dementia a priority

Nearly 8,000 staff (out of 12,500) at Guy’s and St Thomas’ have received a powerful training session to put them in the shoes of patients with dementia.

Every member of staff will watch Barbara’s story, a short film about Barbara who has symptoms of dementia. The film was launched in September, and follows Barbara’s journey though hospital and the challenges she faces.

“All staff, both clinical and non clinical, are expected to have a good understanding of the issues faced by dementia patients so that they can all provide exceptional care,” said Chief Nurse and Director of Patient Experience Eileen Sills.

Barbara’s story is just one of many initiatives in place at Guy’s and St Thomas’ to improve the awareness of dementia among all staff.
