Patients with chronic foot problems are being cared for more quickly thanks to improvements in local foot health services. They are seen and treated within six weeks of being referred by their GP at specialist local clinics.

Arthur Roberts, 86, is seen at the Artesian Health Centre in Bermondsey. He has calluses and corns and sometimes the fragile skin around his feet weeps and need dressing.

With the help of the community podiatrists, retired publican, Arthur is able to stand and get the exercise he needs.

Arthur says: "I am very shaky on my feet so I see the podiatrist twice a week. Because I live alone, I really appreciate the support I get from the podiatrists. They have started coming out to me at home. I really couldn't ask for better service."

The community foot health team treats thousands of patients each year for conditions including chronic foot pain, ulcers and skin or nail problems at 10 clinics across Lambeth and Southwark.

Rupert Maher, service manager for community podiatry services at Guy's and St Thomas', says: "We have 25 foot health professionals working in community-based clinics which has helped us transform the way we care for people with foot problems.

“We are proud that we are able to give people the foot care they need quickly and even closer to where they live."
