Trust comes top for staff engagement in the national Staff Survey

Guy’s and St Thomas’ achieved the top ranking for staff engagement in trusts in England, according to the national NHS Staff Survey results which were published today (Tuesday 23 February).

The Trust received a score of 4.03 (on a scale of 1-5) for staff engagement this year, compared to a national average of 3.79 for combined acute and community trusts.

In addition, 89% of staff would recommend the Trust as a place to be treated, compared to a national average of 68%, and 79% of staff would recommend the Trust as a place to work, compared to a national average of 58%.

The Trust also scores well for staff saying they feel supported by their immediate managers and are satisfied with the quality of work and patient care they are able to deliver.  

The Staff Survey ran from September to November last year, and more than 4,400 staff at Guy’s and St Thomas’ completed it.

Ann Macintyre, Director of Workforce and Organisational Development, says: “I am delighted that we are ranked as equal top for staff engagement. Over the last few years, our scores for staff engagement have steadily improved despite the challenges facing the NHS. This is good news for both staff and patients, as research suggests that high levels of employee engagement improve patient experience, safety and outcomes.

“The results give us a valuable insight into the views of staff and, importantly, an understanding of where we need to improve. We will closely analyse the results and work with staff to develop meaningful action plans which tackle areas where we need to do better, such as equal opportunities for career progression and tackling concerns where there are issues of bullying or discrimination. We have already started work to address these important issues."
