Who can refer
We can only accept referrals for patients who develop lymphoedema because of cancer/treatment for cancer.
Referrals are accepted from healthcare professionals who have seen the patient and considers them to have symptoms associated with lymphoedema:
- for patients who have received all, or part, of their treatment for cancer within Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust
- for patients who did not have cancer treatment within this Trust but live within Lambeth, Southwark or Lewisham and are registered with a GP in these boroughs.
For patients who do not meet the above criteria, or who have non-cancer related lymphoedema, the referring healthcare professional can access the British Lymphology website directory for details of lymphoedema services close to them.
Referrals from King's College Hospital are also accepted where patients require assessment for swelling secondary to treatment for breast cancer, and their care is under the NHS.
How to refer
For external referrals, please forward your referral letter, including all relevant clinical details, to the lymphoedema service via post or email (contact details at the top of this page).
If you have an NHS.net email address, you can email us at firstname.lastname@example.org (please note if you are sending from a non NHS.net email account this will not be a secure method for patient identifiable data).
For internal referrals, please complete a referral form on EPR.
If the referring healthcare professional considers that an urgent appointment is required, reasons to support this request should be outlined on the referral form/letter.
For patients receiving palliative management of their cancer who develop lymphoedema – the aim is to try and see them within two weeks of receiving a referral.
We do not accept emergency referrals. Any patient with symptoms of acute pain and/or cellulitis should be assessed by their GP.
