  • Biography

    Dr Laura-Ann McGill joined Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust in 2019 as a consultant cardiologist. Her areas of expertise include heart failure, advanced heart failure therapies, cardiovascular MRI, cardiovascular CT, echocardiography and medical education.

    Laura-Ann graduated from the University of Glasgow School of Medicine, with commendation, in 2005. She completed her general medical training at the Royal London Hospital, London Chest Hospital and University College Hospital and became a member of the Royal College of Physicians in 2008.

    Laura-Ann undertook cardiology specialty training in the north east Thames region, completing her final two years of training through the pan London heart failure rotation. This included tertiary centre experience at Barts Heart Centre, and transplant/advanced heart failure training at Harefield Hospital. Laura-Ann is a multi-modality imager with EACVI level III CMR accreditation, SCCT Level II Cardiac CT accreditation and British Society of Echocardiography transthoracic accreditation. She received her cardiology certificate of completion of training in 2018.

    Before joining the St Thomas' Hospital heart failure team, Laura-Ann spent a year as a locum consultant at St George's Hospital, working in the heart failure unit, the only dedicated inpatient unit in the country. She also jointly ran a cardiorenal clinic, designed to manage complex patients with combined renal and heart failure.

    In 2017, Laura-Ann completed a PhD at the Royal Brompton Hospital, Imperial College London, on 'novel cardiovascular magnetic resonance phenotyping of the myocardium'. She won numerous prizes for her PhD work in diffusion tensor imaging, presented her work internationally and authored a number of original papers. During her time at Imperial College she was also a successful triathlete, competing as part of the Great Britain triathlon squad in international competitions.

    Laura-Ann has extensive teaching experience and has supervised a number of junior doctors and students. She is a member of the Royal Society of Medicine cardiology council and is jointly responsible for delivering the heart failure section teaching programme.
