  • Biography

    Carolyn Hemsley joined Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust as a consultant in infectious diseases and microbiology in 2007. She was appointed clinical and service lead for microbiology and infection in 2014 including a leadership role in Viapath supporting the infection science laboratories and specifically the microbiology laboratory service.

    Carolyn trained at Oxford University, obtaining her medical degree in 1994. She started training in infection as a registrar in Oxford and completed her final years as a registrar in London after her PhD. She was awarded a Wellcome Trust training Fellowship in 2000 and successfully completed a PhD at Tufts University, Boston in collaboration with Imperial College, London.

    Carolyn set up, and continues to lead, the Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy Service (OPAT), which supports patients in the community whilst receiving intravenous antimicrobials. She runs an OPAT and general infection clinic at Guy’s Hospital. The infection clinic has a focus on chronic infections (eg bone and joint, deep-seated and organ space collections, fungal infections).
