Mr Ramesh Thurairaja MD, FRCS (Urol), FEBU is a consultant urological surgeon in bladder cancer, reconstructive and robotic surgery at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.
Ramesh completed his medical education at the University of Southampton before embarking on his specialist urological training in the Severn and Wessex Deanery. He undertook his first fellowship at the world-renowned Inselspital in Bern, Switzerland. During this period, he was mentored by Professor Urs Studer in bladder cancer and reconstructive surgery particularly in creating 'Studer' orthotopic bladder substitution.
On completion of his specialist training, Ramesh then concentrated in broadening his surgical expertise by undertaking a robotic fellowship in pelvic oncology at Southmead Hospital, Bristol. On completion, as a robotic surgeon with a specialist interest in pelvic oncology, he took up a substantive consultant position at Kent & Canterbury Hospital where he successfully started and led the robotic bladder cancer service for East Kent for 20 months.
At Guy’s and St Thomas’, Ramesh hopes to bring to the department not only his skill set and expertise in robotic surgery, bladder reconstruction and enhanced recovery but also his enthusiasm for research and innovative ideas for improving patient care and outcomes for the local population and those beyond.
Ramesh is a member of the British Association of Urology (BAUS) as well as the European Association of Urology (EAU).
