Toxicology referrals

Advice on acute poisonings / overdose

Enquiries from healthcare providers concerning the management of patients presenting with acute poisoning should be directed urgently to the National Poisons Information Service on 0844 892 0111 or by using the on-line information database TOXBASE® (www.toxbase.org).

Medical toxicology clinic referrals

The medical toxicology clinic and club drug clinic accepts both written and Choose and Book system referrals.

GPs and healthcare professionals should send written referrals to:

Clinical toxicology
3rd floor, Block C, South Wing
St Thomas' Hospital
Westminster Bridge Road
London SE1 7EH

We receive referrals predominantly from the greater London area and south east England, but also accept referrals from anywhere in the UK.

Patients must be referred by their GP or local hospital; we do not take direct referrals from patients.

This clinic treats poisoning or suspected poisoning for all ages (children <12 years of age should be seen by a local paediatrician prior to referral to the toxicology service).

Paediatric cases will normally need to be reviewed by a local paediatrician prior to referral, for clinical assessment and examination.

None of the clinicians undertake private clinical toxicology work, however there is a system by which private patients can be seen in the medical toxicology clinic – if you require further information, please contact the clinical toxicology service secretary (contact details below).
