Advice on acute poisonings / overdose
Enquiries from healthcare providers concerning the management of patients presenting with acute poisoning should be directed urgently to the National Poisons Information Service on 0344 892 0111 or by using the online information database TOXBASE® (http://www.toxbase.org/).
Medical toxicology clinic referrals
The medical toxicology clinic and club drug clinic accepts referrals via the NHS e-Referral service (formally Choose and Book) and electronic referrals only.
Referrals from GPs and healthcare professionals must be submitted using the NHS e-Referral service.
We receive referrals predominantly from the greater London area and south east England, but also accept referrals from anywhere in the UK.
Patients must be referred by their GP or local hospital; we do not take direct referrals from patients.
This clinic treats poisoning or suspected poisoning for all ages (children <12 years of age should be seen by a local paediatrician prior to referral to the toxicology service).
Paediatric cases will normally need to be reviewed by a local paediatrician prior to referral, for clinical assessment and examination.
None of the clinicians undertake private clinical toxicology work, however there is a system by which private patients can be seen in the medical toxicology clinic – if you require further information, please contact the clinical toxicology service secretary (contact details below).
The clinical toxicology secretary can be contacted for advice on the referral process.
