Our values
Our strategy and values

- Better, faster, fairer healthcare for all
Our values describe who we are as an organisation and help shape our Guy’s and St Thomas’ culture. They guide us in everything that we do and are central to how we deliver our strategy.
We updated our values in September 2024 to express what we expect of ourselves and each other, both now and in the future. Almost 1,800 colleagues from across the Trust, helped develop these to summarise what matters to us as an organisation.
Caring: we put patients first
Ambitious: we innovate and strive for excellence
Inclusive: we respect each other and work collaboratively
Living our values and behaviours
Our behaviours framework gives examples of what people should see or hear when we are demonstrating our values. By behaving in this way we are helping to create a caring, ambitious and inclusive organisation for our patients and carers, our staff and the communities we serve.
Watch this video to hear our colleagues talk about how they put the values into practice.
Chinonye: We are caring. We put patients first.
Mark: We are ambitious. We innovate and strive for excellence.
Angela: We are inclusive. We respect each other and work collaboratively.
We are caring.
Spyridon: Caring for me is a human value.
It's not necessarily only a work value. It's when you are properly interested about the human you have in front of you, rather than the patient.
Angela: It means to be, compassionate and empathetic and treating patients as if it was your family or friend lying in that bed.
Chante: Making sure that the family and the patients feel included in their care and that they have a voice in their care.
Mark: We always introduce ourselves to the patients.
We always take the time to try and chat with them, you know, make them feel relaxed. It's a very daunting place, a hospital.
Chinonye: Creating an environment where they feel safe and comfortable.
For me, it's really important to build a trusting relationship and work with them to ensure that we're improving outcomes for them, their babies, and making sure they have a positive experience.
Lamin: When we say, care, it's not all about the care that we give to the patient, but also the care that we receive.
All the members of the team are very caring, you know, like we look after each other.
Grace: Checking in with colleagues and making sure everyone's okay, making sure everyone is happy and satisfied in their role.
Because when we are all feeling our best and doing our best, then we can offer the best care to our patients.
We are ambitious.
Chinonye: I think we should all be ambitious we should all strive to be better than we were yesterday.
Lamin: I work with, with a very ambitious team I would say, who always have that vision of, okay, how are we going to improve?
Chante: We have the big 5 on the unit, which is 5 things that we want to strive towards. It could be anything from hand hygiene to infection control to patient care, so we all have a team goal to get to by the end of the month.
Hemanshoo: We, as a group of individuals are very reflective, and we use data all the time to again, look and see how can we improve things. How could we schedule that better? What could we offer the patient that will deliver better care for them?
Grace: We're always at the forefront of research, particularly involving medical technology.
Spyridon: Moving things forward. Accessing new treatments.
Having clinical trials, new interventions. Anything that moves medicine and care for patients forward.
We are inclusive.
Chante: Being inclusive is about making my team and my patients feel welcomed and safe and feel like they can bring their experiences and their knowledge to the team, and we can all learn from it.
Angela: Because you want an inclusive environment and team and you want people to be treated with respect so that you can get the best out of people.
And I think if they feel comfortable and they feel they can be themselves then it's a great learning and thriving environment.
Spyridon: We see people, we see patients of all ethnic, religious backgrounds and diverse in every way you can imagine.
Lamin: Almost every day you are learning new things about what their culture is like, what their traditions and norms are like, so that you will know your boundary.
Okay, if I'm doing certain things, I'm not, you know, crossing their boundaries.
Mark: We have lots of different teams that all come together to treat our patients with respect and dignity. It's a very special place.
Hemanshoo: Being caring, being ambitious, being inclusive, that for me, you know, resonates with how I work and what drives me to come to work every day.
Chante: This is a great place to work. Not just because of what we do, but how we do it, and the Trust values are a massive part of that.
We are caring, ambitious, inclusive.
