Overview
Acarizax treatment for house dust mite allergy
Acarizax® is a medicine used to treat allergic symptoms caused by house dust mites. It’s a tablet that you need to take every day for 3 years.
Acarizax helps your body get used to being exposed to house dust mites so you get fewer allergy symptoms.
If you’re allergic to house dust mites, you might get symptoms all throughout the year. These symptoms include:
- an itchy or runny nose, or sneezing caused by inflammation of the nose (allergic rhinitis)
- red, itchy, irritated eyes caused by inflammation of the eye (allergic conjunctivitis)
- wheezing, coughing or shortness of breath caused by inflammation of the airway (allergic asthma)
You can usually treat these symptoms with other medicines like:
- antihistamine tablets
- combination nasal sprays that contain an antihistamine and a steroid
- eye drops
- inhalers that might contain a steroid, if you have asthma
If these medicines do not work and your allergy is affecting your quality of life, we might recommend Acarizax.

How Acarizax treatment works
Acarizax contains a small, fixed amount of house dust mite extract. This is the substance that causes your allergic reaction (allergen).
Taking small doses of the allergen each day helps your body get used to it. Your immune system will slowly build up a tolerance to house dust mites. This means your body will react less to house dust mites and you will get fewer symptoms.
This type of treatment is called desensitisation or immunotherapy.
You’ll need to continue taking the regular medicines you take for your allergic symptoms while taking Acarizax. If you have asthma, you’ll need to continue taking your regular asthma medicines as prescribed.
Within 3 years, your symptoms should improve. After that, you should be able to reduce the amount of other medicines you take for your allergy.
Who can have Acarizax treatment
