Overview
Radiotherapy to the stomach - eating and drinking before treatment
Your stomach needs to be the same size for every radiotherapy treatment you have. To make sure that it’s the same size, it needs to be empty.
How to prepare your stomach for radiotherapy
You’ll need to have an empty stomach for your planning scan and for all your radiotherapy treatments. This means not eating any food (fasting) for at least 2 hours before your treatment.
When to stop eating and drinking
Appointments are usually in the morning, so we advise that on the day of your treatment, you do not eat anything until after your appointment.
- Do not eat anything for at least 2 hours before your appointment.
- You can drink up to 500ml of water (non fizzy) between 1 and 2 hours before your appointment.
- For the hour before your appointment, you must drink nothing.
After your planning scan or treatment
The scan appointment will take at least 30 minutes. You’ll be able to eat and drink normally afterwards.
