Celebrating our diverse workforce

Guy’s and St Thomas’ is today (Wednesday 17 June) taking part in a day of celebration being held across the NHS to honour the Windrush pioneers and the legacy of diversity they brought to the health service.

The ship ‘Empire Windrush’ arrived in the UK from Jamaica in June 1948, bringing the first wave of Caribbean migrants who had come to seek work and help rebuild post-war Britain.

The NHS, which was also established in 1948, became a major employer of the new arrivals.

Staynton Brown, Guy’s and St Thomas’ Director of Equality and Human Rights, says: “The Windrush pioneers left an incredibly positive legacy of diversity in the NHS.

“Here at Guy’s and St Thomas’, we’re proud to have a workforce that reflects the diversity of the local community that we serve. We employ committed, highly skilled healthcare workers from a wide range of ethnic and cultural backgrounds.”
