The new Cancer Centre at Guy’s Hospital and Guy’s and St Thomas’ apprenticeships programme were both winners at the Health Business Awards 2016.
They were recognised at an awards ceremony in central London on Tuesday 29 November which was hosted by The One Show’s resident GP, Dr Sarah Jarvis.
The Cancer Centre had been shortlisted in the Hospital Building category because of positive media coverage and other publicity when it opened on Monday 26 September.
It was designed by patients for patients to bring together most treatment under one roof – previously cancer care was provided in 13 different locations in eight different buildings on the St Thomas’ and Guy’s sites.
Diana Crawshaw, who chaired the Patient Reference Group, explained: “Patients have been consulted at every stage and no decision has been made without us. Our views have been welcomed, listened to and acted on.”
The first outpatient clinics were held in the new Cancer Centre on Monday 26 September, chemotherapy treatment started on Monday 3 October, and radiotherapy treatment started on Monday 7 November.
Guy’s and St Thomas’ multi-award winning apprenticeships programme won the Healthcare Recruitment category of the Health Business Awards.
Over the past five years there has been a 500% increase in the number of apprenticeships offered at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and, most importantly, 66% of those who successfully completed apprenticeships in 2015/16 went on to be recruited to permanent jobs in the Trust.
The apprenticeships programme is also shortlisted for the Training Journal Awards – winners will be announced on Tuesday 6 December – and for the Learning Awards organised by the Learning & Performance Institute with an awards ceremony to follow in early February.
Courtney Sherwell, Education, Training and Development (ET&D) Associate, says: “Our apprenticeship schemes are a fantastic way to recruit and support young people with new skills and fresh perspectives.
“I am delighted that we have won this award and been shortlisted for two more. I would like to thank all the Trust staff who have supported our apprentices over the last few years.”
