Long service award winners

The annual Long Service Awards presentation on Thursday 3 December celebrated more than 800 years of service at Guy’s and St Thomas’. The awards were presented to 33 staff who have worked at the Trust for more than 25 years.

Sir Hugh Taylor, Trust Chairman, spoke at the awards presentation. He said: “It is heartwarming to celebrate the contributions made by people at Guy’s and St Thomas’ over the last 25 years.

“I’m particularly pleased to see so many different services represented here today, from staff who care for patients every day, to people whose vital work we don’t often see. This award is one small way in which we can express our thanks to the people who have dedicated their working lives to Guy’s and St Thomas’.”

Chitra Jayasooriya, who joined the Trust in the 1980s, is a medical secretary in the Assisted Conception Unit (ACU) at Guy’s Hospital. She commented: “When I started here there were just two doctors, two nurses and myself in the ACU. Now, there are more than 50 staff. It’s such a friendly place to work, you’re really part of the family. I’m so proud of all the work I do.”

Dr Heather Milburn, consultant respiratory physician, said: “There have been a lot of changes over the years – one of the biggest was when Guy’s and St Thomas’ merged into one trust. The Trust is much bigger now – you don’t recognise everyone when you’re walking down the corridor any more!

“My proudest achievement has been setting up the Trust’s TB clinic. There was nothing when I started and now we run a very good service for our patients.”

Patricia Agyiri started working as a housekeeping assistant 26 years ago. Her colleagues describe her as very conscientious, sociable and a great team player.

She said: “It’s great to work with the people here. The sense of teamwork and the managers are great. Things have changed for me personally because I’ve had my family while I’ve been working here.”

Bill Stevens, a medical engineering technician who joined the Trust after working in the Army, added: “The tasks I do now are similar to the ones I did 25 years ago but the technology has improved. I enjoy the work and we’re part of a fantastic team.”
