Patients have rated the overall care at Guy's and St Thomas' as very good, according to the results of the Care Quality Commission's national NHS inpatient survey.

More than 500 patients discharged from Guy's and St Thomas' in July 2018 gave their feedback and the overall experience of care rating was 8.5 out of ten. This is one of the best scores for Trusts in London.

The Trust’s performance, when compared with other trusts, is better for eight of the 63 benchmarking indicators and about the same for the others. The eight areas are:

  • privacy when being examined and treated in A&E
  • noise at night from staff
  • knowing which nurse would being looking after them
  • information given to patients on their condition and treatment
  • knowing what would happen with patients care once they had left hospital
  • being given clear written or printed information on their medicines
  • staff discussed participation in research during the patients hospital stay

The areas in which the Trust’s performance has improved significantly since the 2018 survey are:

  • overall experience
  • quality of hospital food
  • privacy when being examined or treated in A&E
  • being bothered by noise at night by staff

The only area where the Trust’s performance declined related to making sure patients are aware of how to raise a concern or make a complaint.

Dame Eileen Sills, Chief Nurse at Guy’s and St Thomas’, said: “Our staff are committed to providing our patients with the very best care possible so we are very pleased that this has been clearly demonstrated in the national NHS inpatient survey.

“It’s particularly pleasing that the overall experience of care in our hospitals has continued to improve, and we are among the best performing Trusts in London, despite seeing increasing demands on our services.

“It’s also very encouraging that there is only one area where our performance has slightly declined compared to five last year. This shows that our performance is continuing to go in the right direction.

“We recognise that in some areas we need to do better and we are constantly looking at ways we can improve our service so we can provide our patients with even better care.

“We are very thankful to our patients for taking the time to complete the survey and to our staff whose hard work has led to a continued improvement in our performance.”
