Guy's and St Thomas' in top three for NHS research

For the third year running, Guy's and St Thomas' is one of the top three trusts for NHS research.

Out of 251 NHS trusts and 15 primary care networks, Guy’s and St Thomas’ ranked:

• third for quantity of research with 422 studies
• sixth for the number of patients involved in a study with 13,700 patients recruited.

Professor Charles Wolfe, Director of Research and Development at Guy’s and St Thomas', says: “Clinical research is a vital part of the work of the NHS, so it’s fantastic that we’ve increased the amount of research by 12.5% compared with last year. Patients and volunteers are at the heart of this – without their involvement it would be impossible to develop new treatments or investigate what treatment works best.”

Being a research-active trust benefits patients. Evidence shows that patients do better in hospitals that do research – even if they do not take part in a study.

Jonathan Sheffield is Chief Executive Officer of the NIHR Clinical Research Network. He says: “It’s great to see a real appetite for research in south London. I would like to thank all the patients and carers who have taken part in research, and thereby made a contribution to improving NHS treatments for everyone.

“I would also like to congratulate the trusts in south London for increasing their number of studies. We know that research is something that patients really value and these trusts are creating the opportunities for patients to get involved.”

The figures for 2013/14 were published today (26 June), by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network.
