Five local mums have trained as breastfeeding peer counsellors – joining 47 women who already support new mothers to breastfeed after giving birth.

The La Leche League training programme is run by Guy's and St Thomas' community team and trains breastfeeding mothers - who work alongside health visitors and midwives - to support pregnant women and other new mums to learn the basic techniques of breastfeeding.

There are many health benefits for women who breastfeed in the first six months after giving birth including reducing the risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer and osteoporosis later in life.

Clarissa Georgestone, Breastfeeding Coordinator says: "By breastfeeding new mums can go some way towards protecting themselves and the future health of their babies. Whilst breastfeeding can happen very easily for some women, others may need a little more help to find the technique that works best for them."

"Having the support of other new mums who can share their experiences - the ups and the downs - can be invaluable. Our breastfeeding team are here to give support and advice. We want to hear from more pregnant women and new mothers in Southwark."

Breastfeeding mums can visit five breastfeeding support cafes in Bermondsey, Rotherhithe, Dulwich and Peckham. Peer counsellors train for 12 weeks. If you would like more information about the training programme or advice on breastfeeding contact: Clarissa Georgestone on 020 7 138 7815.
