Guy’s and St Thomas’ has achieved the 3rd stage of the Mayor of London’s NHS Cycle strategy for the NHS in London. We were one of only 8 trusts in London to achieve the 3rd phase of this strategy, and the only one in South London.

The strategy aims to improve access to healthcare, foster active lifestyles for Londoners and reduce the number of vehicle journeys and associated pollution and carbon emissions.

Events held in the last year at the Trust include: free cycle maintenance courses, several free Dr Bike sessions, an introductory cycle seminar and a cyclist ‘thank you’ breakfast held earlier this month. All new suppliers to the Trust that operate large lorries will also be required to have safety standards installed to alert drivers to the presence of cyclists.

Alexandra Hammond, sustainability manager said: “We were delighted to receive this recognition for our work to promote cycling as a sustainable, safe, fun and cheaper means of travel for our staff.”

The NHS has a major role to play in promoting sustainable travel and cycling both to improve public health and as a major employer in London.
