Respiratory centre wins design award

An innovative new centre for patients with complex respiratory conditions has been named as Best Acute Hospital Development in the prestigious Building Better Healthcare Awards.

The Lane Fox REMEO® Respiratory Centre at East Surrey Hospital in Redhill is the UK’s first purpose-built unit to ‘wean’ respiratory patients from mechanical ventilation and enable them to eventually return home.

It operates as a satellite to the world-famous Lane Fox Respiratory Unit at St Thomas’ Hospital.

The new unit in Redhill is the result of a public-private partnership between Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, BOC Ltd and REMEO Healthcare Ltd - BOC and REMEO are both subsidiaries of The Linde Group.

It was designed by architects Murphy Philipps who picked up the award on 4 November at a ceremony hosted by TV presenter Gethin Jones.

Dr Nicholas Hart, Clinical Director of both the Lane Fox Respiratory Unit at St Thomas’ Hospital and the Lane Fox REMEO Respiratory Centre in Redhill, says: “Moving patients from intensive care to an environment more conducive to recovery aids their recovery and enables their transition home.

“Following its opening just over a year ago, the Lane Fox REMEO Centre currently has 14 complex respiratory patients with the expectation that the capacity of 20 patients will be reached by Easter 2016.”

Two other projects to improve the way we care for patients were highly commended in the Building Better Healthcare Awards.
