Staff Awards celebrate outstanding achievements

Cathy Ingram, head of service for the adult community directorate receives the Inspiring Leadership Award from Baroness Lawrence.

Staff, volunteers and celebrity guests attended a spectacular Trust Awards ceremony to celebrate the outstanding achievements and exceptional care provided to patients on Friday 21 November.

Special guest Baroness Doreen Lawrence presented the Inspiring Leadership Award. Baroness Lawrence said: “You should all congratulate yourselves for the remarkable work that you do. The thing that I admire most is the teamwork and the way that you all support each other to ensure that you really make a difference to your patients.”

The Trust Awards was hosted by Chief Nurse, Eileen Sills and Finance Director, Martin Shaw. Among the other special guests were ITN newsreader Julie Etchingham and Kelle Bryan from 90s pop group Eternal, who is a patient in the Lupus Unit, as well as a fundraiser for Lupus UK.

The winners were:

  • Award for Excellence in Support Services – the Essentia portering team for their campaign to alleviate congestion in the lifts on both our busy hospital sites
  • Volunteer/Fundraiser of the Year – joint winners Romi Grau, a volunteer in the pulmonary rehabilitation team, the Friends shop and the Friends office, as well as in many other departments.  And Gavin Tiffin, hospitality manager who raised over £12,000 for Evelina London. Last year he cycled 360 miles from London to Paris, completed four marathons in four weeks, adding a 66 miles ultra Marathon this year
  • Community Services Award – the Lane Fox Outreach team. The team care for patients with severe breathing problems at home. They provide the support and reassurance which prevents many hospital admissions
  • Award for Dignity and Compassion – Denise Gorman, clinical nurse specialist in the cancer team, who plans care for patients when they are ready to leave hospital
  • Award for Innovation/supporting Fit for the Future – The Golden Hour Team, in the ophthalmology department who have redesigned their clinics so that patients can have several different tests and treatments during their clinic appointment – and all in just an hour
  • Clinical Service or Team of the Year - the Early Pregnancy and Acute Gynaecology Unit is a small team of specialist nurses, sonographers and administrative staff who care for women experiencing difficulties during pregnancy or miscarriage
  • Inspiring Leadership Award – Cathy Ingram, is a head of service in the adult community directorate and currently manages the community rehabilitation and therapy services. She was nominated for both her commitment to her staff and to the local communities we serve
  • The Patricia Moberly CARE awards – an individual and team winner were chosen from the monthly winners of the CARE awards. The individual winner - Francis Busingye, a food service assistant, won for his exceptional bravery when he saw a nurse being attacked by a violent patient on Sarah Swift Ward
  • And the Team winner – was Northumberland Ward won for their efforts to help a dying 38 year old man and his fiancée to get married just 24 hours before he sadly passed away. The team went to exceptional lengths enabling the young man and his fiancée to spend their last hours as husband and wife
  • The Chairman and Chief Executive Award was won by the Trust’s apprentices. More than 100 apprentices have been trained in the last three years at the Trust and many have gone on to develop successful careers at Guy’s and St Thomas’.

Chief Executive Ron Kerr said: “Congratulations to all the winners and nominees, you are all great role models. This a fantastic occasion to recognise the achievements of individuals and teams who go far beyond what  is expected of them to ensure that patients and their families receive the best possible care.”
