    Mark Ide graduated from Guy's in 1989 and after several years in hospital and oral surgery posts commenced part-time practice and started working for his PhD. He was awarded FDS in 1993 and MSc with Distinction in periodontology in 1996. He completed extensive consultant level training in restorative dentistry in 2001, resulting in a further fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He was subsequently appointed senior lecturer in periodontology and honorary consultant in restorative dentistry, and is currently head of the department of periodontology at King’s College London (KCL). He is a member of the Faculty of Translational Research.

    Dr Ide has:

    • held a number of other roles, including Honorary Secretary of the British Society of Periodontology and Vice President of the British Dental Hygienists & Therapists Association.
    • been involved extensively in the training of dental students at KCL, as well as in clinical research.
    • been a guest lecturer at over 50 national and international professional meetings and is currently the Postgraduate Course lead in periodontology, directly teaching specialists in periodontology, children’s dentistry, implant dentistry and other specialties.
    • supervised over 20 postgraduate research projects and has over 30 published research papers.
    • acted as a referee for a range of international journals and grant-giving bodies. He acts as a dental consultant for Clearcast and for the Radio Advertising Clearance Centre.
  • Special interests

    • Management of advanced periodontitis in susceptible and compromised individuals
    • Periodontal, restorative, implant and orthodontic interface
    • Advanced hard and soft tissue surgical techniques
    • Mucogingival surgery (grafting), aesthetic gingival recontouring and crown lengthening for difficult restorative cases
    • Hereditary and drug induced gingival enlargement
  • Research interests

    Maintained his PhD work in dentine sensitivity, assessment and treatment.

    Relationships between gum disease and diseases elsewhere in the body, involving a range of investigations, collaborating with colleagues at King's Health Partners and elsewhere.

    Other ongoing work: New diagnostic markers for gum disease, treatment of failing dental implants and clinical trials of treatments.
