Midwife, mother and babyMidwife-led care
The Home from Home Birth Centre is midwife-led, meaning it is staffed by midwives and maternity support workers.
Midwives support women during labour to have a normal birth, using options such as hydrotherapy (birthing pool), aromatherapy, massage and entonox (gas and air) for comfort and for managing pain. Opiate analgesia (injection of diamorphine) is also available.
Around 1,300 babies are born in the Home from Home Birth Centre each year, which is more than 20% of all babies born at St Thomas’ Hospital. Research has shown that midwife-led birth centres are safe for healthy women and their babies.
Women who plan to give birth in a midwife-led birth centre experience fewer interventions during labour, which contributes to a faster recovery following birth. If a woman decides during labour that she would like an epidural, or if any complications develop, transfer to the obstetrician-led birth centre next door (the Hospital Birth Centre) will be arranged.
If your pregnancy is more complex, or you have had a previous caesarean birth, you will usually be advised to plan to give birth in our Hospital Birth Centre, where there are specialist obstetric, midwifery and anaesthetic staff on hand.
You may be unsure whether this applies to you, or you may prefer to discuss other options for care in labour and/or planned place of birth (including Home from Home or home birth) in more detail. If so, you should speak to your named midwife or your link consultant obstetrician (named on the front of your maternity notes).
You can also request a clinic appointment with consultant midwife Julie Frohlich, to explore the benefits and risks associated with different care options. Finally, you can speak to the on-call supervisor of midwives about your care choices via the hospital switchboard. You will find contact details on the right hand side of this page.
