Before your appointment

Please do:

  • eat and drink as normal
  • take your usual medicines
  • wear loose clothing, a top with buttons at the front is ideal
  • make sure your hair is clean

Please don't:

  • do not wear hair weaves or hair extensions
  • do not use hair products such as gels, oil, wax or sprays
  • do not wear tight neck jumpers or tops as you'll not be able to remove them once the EEG wires are attached
  • do not leave your home for the duration of the test

During your appointment

Home video telemetry is an EEG that records the brainwaves for 1 to 3 days depending on the amount of information needed. It helps increase the chances of us catching an event and helps us understand how many events you have over a period of time. It is done in your home.

You'll come to the EEG department for your appointment.

The process is like a routine EEG which you may have already had.

We'll attach small metal discs called electrodes to your scalp using sticky paste. We place a hair net and a bandage around your head and under your chin to stop the electrodes from falling off.

The electrodes are connected to a small recorder, which is placed in a small bag. This can be worn on the body or placed on the bed when you're sleeping. A video camera will record you throughout the test.

We'll give you a diary to complete and to record any events or seizures. We will give you a briefcase to take home that contains all the equipment you'll need for the test. Full instructions and demonstration of the equipment will be given when you come for your appointment.

The set-up appointment will last 90 minutes.

You'll go home and the test normally lasts 2 days. We can arrange transport to take you home.

It is important that the equipment does not get wet.

After your appointment

You'll remove the equipment at home as shown at your set-up appointment.

Please pack the equipment away in briefcase as instructed. A courier will collect the equipment from your home at a time agreed in your set-up appointment.

You can wash your hair with shampoo to remove the paste from your hair.

The physiologist and consultant neurophysiologist will analyse your test.

We'll send a full report to the consultant who referred you. Results are not available straight after the test.
