Referrals

Making a referral

We accept referrals from all health professionals.

As a tertiary service we mainly accept referrals from other dermatologists.

GP referrals

All NHS GP referrals must be submitted using the NHS e-Referral Service (e-RS). Referrals sent by email or post from NHS GPs will not be processed.

You need to submit your referral within 24 hours of your patient consultation.

Non-GP or tertiary referrals

Please email or post your referral to us.

Please confirm:

  • if you want virtual advice and guidance
  • if you want a single review of your patient with management advice, or
  • for us to take over the care of your patient

Referrals from other hospitals must include a completed inter-provider minimum data set. Make sure one is sent within 48 hours of making a referral.

If you would like to discuss your patient virtually with our lead eczema and psoriasis consultant, please email [email protected]

You must always send a referral with your request for advice and guidance.

We'll meet with you via Microsoft Teams. We'll send you a link to the meeting. The meeting will last 15 minutes and you'll meet with:

  • at least 2 consultants from the eczema and psoriasis service
  • a junior doctor or administrator

Staff from the following services may also attend:

  • nursing
  • histopathology
  • pharmacy
  • psychology

If there are members from the team you think should attend, please let us know.

If ahead of the meeting you think your patient needs to be seen face-to-face, please let our administration team know.

Please provide a short summary of your case, outlining the key clinical information. Clinical photographs and test results can be shared during the meeting. If you would like us to review any investigations, such as skin histopathology, please forward these to us before the meeting. Tissue slides and/or tissue blocks should be sent to:

Eczema and Psoriasis MDM
Dermatopathology laboratory
St John's Institute of Dermatology, 2nd floor, South Wing (Staircase C)
St Thomas' Hospital,
Westminster Bridge Road, London SE1 7EH

After the meeting we'll send you a letter summarising what was discussed and any recommendations. If we need to see your patient face-to-face, we'll book an appointment for them.

Urgent referrals

We aim to see all new patients within 12 weeks of receiving a referral.

If your referral is urgent, please phone 020 7188 6417.

For dermatological emergencies, please:

  • refer your patient to an emergency department
  • refer to your local acute dermatology service, or
  • phone our hospital switchboard on 020 7188 7188 and ask for the on-call dermatology service
