Neurodiversity strategy

Equality, diversity and inclusion

Putting neurodiverse voices at the heart of care is the focus of our Trust-wide neurodiversity strategy, published December 2025.

The strategy sets out our commitment to providing outstanding, equitable and accessible care for neurodivergent individuals of all ages.

It was developed by working directly with neurodivergent patients, their families and carers as well was our colleagues. Thanks to funding from Guy’s & St Thomas’ Charity, we carried out extensive engagement to make sure that their lived experiences are at the heart of our plans.

To meet national policy requirements our approach focuses on autism, however, the principles and actions outlined apply to the wider neurodivergent community – including individuals with ADHD, dyslexia and dyspraxia.

Our vision

To provide outstanding, equitable and accessible care for neurodivergent patients, colleagues and members of our wider community.

We are committed to creating a healthcare environment that embraces neurodiversity in all its forms. We aim for care that is not only outstanding in quality but truly accessible and equitable for neurodivergent individuals. Equally important is supporting our own people. We want every member of staff to feel they can thrive here.

A better experience for patients and colleagues

Our plans with be delivered through 6 key areas.

Flexible appointment scheduling and sensory-friendly spaces designed to meet diverse needs and reduce barriers to care.

Comprehensive staff training programs and improved identification systems to ensure neurodivergent patients receive the support they need.

Use of health passports and care approaches which support the 'whole patient' – both their medical and social health needs.

Enhanced family advocacy programmes and communication systems that recognise the importance of support networks.

Early intervention and tailored support which enable smooth transitions from children's to adult healthcare services.

Work with our colleagues to ensure we use inclusive recruitment, HR and workplace accommodation processes to create a supportive environment for neurodivergent staff.

Delivering on our commitments

We will continue to work with patients, colleagues and external partners as we design and implement the action plans to deliver this strategy.

These plans will be regularly reviewed and adapted in response to changing circumstances and ongoing feedback. Our progress will be monitored by the Trust Board.

We recognise that becoming a fully neurodivergent-affirming organisation is an ongoing journey. This strategy is not a final destination, but a living commitment to continuous learning, adaptation and improvement, shaped in partnership with the neurodivergent community.
