Green Plan to 2028 video
Hear from our staff about what we’ve achieved so far and what’s coming next in our Green Plan to 2028.
Tendai Wileman: At Guy's and St Thomas', we're leading the way in making changes that benefit our patients, our people, and the planet. From improving our green spaces and the air that we breathe, through to producing our own clean, renewable energy.
But that's not all.
Grace Nieves: We have embraced the digital era by rolling out Epic, an electronic patient record system that has helped improve patient care.
Nezar Tourabi: And helped us to reduce printing by 25% in 2024-2025. That is equivalent to 1,500 trees.
Andrew Farr: These e-bikes that have been introduced have been great for my wellbeing at work, and have allowed community healthcare staff to get to visits quicker and more easily. All while reducing emissions.
Charlotte Pereira: And we've made it easier for our patients to return walking aids and recycle inhalers. Preventing equipment like this from going to waste.
Helen Bonneville: We're also making sure our buildings are resilient to a changing climate and built with the environment in mind.
Michael White: We've planted over 4 acres of wildflowers here at Harefield. It's one of the ways that we've looked to improve our biodiversity and improve our green spaces to the benefit of our patients and staff.
Christian Nyamamba: We have introduced healthier and more sustainable food choices to our menus.
Nuno Matias: And reduced food waste by 20% by installing machines like this one, which converts surplus food into compost.
Mark Hazell: Our Gloves Off campaign has reduced the spread of infection and saved more than 2.5 million plastic gloves being needlessly thrown away.
Chinthika Payasena: As a doctor who looks after babies born too early or too sick, complications both linked to air pollution, I'm glad to see that we have taken steps to improve local air quality and improve the health of our communities.
Tendai Wileman: So far, so good, but we want to go further.
Our Green Plan sets out how we will deliver sustainable healthcare, while continuing to provide the best possible care for our patients.
Not only will these measures reduce our environmental impact, they will improve the health and wellbeing of our colleagues, as well as the communities that we serve.

Lorcan Woods: Hello, my name is Lorcan Woods. I'm the Chief Financial Officer here at King's College Hospital, I’m standing underneath our clear air monitoring.
Gordon Bain: Hi, I'm Gordon Bain, Essentia Executive Director of Quality Improvement at Guy's and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.
I'm proud to work closely with the Sustainability team here at the Trust, with lead responsibility for delivering our ambitious sustainability agenda.
I'm delighted that we've published our first ever joint Clean Air Plan with King's College Hospital Trust.
Lorcan: There are 5 focus areas and 27 priority actions reflecting the importance of this.
Gordon: The Clean Air Plan spans 2 trusts, 5 London boroughs, over 39,000 staff and 4 million annual patient contacts.
Personally, I believe that everyone should have equitable access to clean air is absolute fundamental to leading a healthy, happy life.
I also care about clean air for our patients, visitors, staff, the wider community and our loved ones.
Lorcan: And we have a clear determination to help reduce the amount of air pollution and therefore to improve both the health and the health inequality of the people of south east London.
Gordon: We know as a health care provider that pollution can have a major long term detrimental effect on people's health.
Lorcan: So as a staff member, as one of the colleagues, as one of our Team Kings, I would like you to get involved in our Clean Air Action Group.
But you can also get involved in a wide range of other sustainability actions, including through medical gases, for example, or just generally conserving our use of energy around the Trust.
Gordon: If you are a member of the Guy’s and St Thomas’ family join the Clean Air Staff Network and read the plan on GTi - search for Sustainability.
Finally, why not pledge to reduce your own contribution to air pollution by leaving your car at home or avoid using a wood burner at home.
Thank you.
