Mark Lindsay talks about life as a perioperative nurse at Guy's and St Thomas' – video transcript
My name is Mark Lindsay and I'm a band 6 team leader in anaesthetics in Evelina London Children's Hospital.
Having someone entrust their child to you whilst they're unconscious is hard I'm sure. You have to nurse the parents and you have to nurse the kids.
Being able to build that relationship with the parents, you've only got minutes to make them say 'it's okay that you're taking my unconscious child away.'
And I also get to see some of those children later on when they have other problems, or swallow a bean or something. 'I understand you have a bean in your nose', 'yes, I do', 'how did it get there?'' 'I put it there.'
The day is not always easy but I work with next to no one I can think of who is there to make the day harder. Everybody is there to make the day easier, all of us, all the time.
And the commitment is immense. Are you proud to work where you are? Yes, it's pretty cool I really like working in that hospital, it's brilliant.
