Glaucoma technician-led clinic

Eye (ophthalmology)

At this clinic we diagnose, manage and treat all kinds of glaucoma.

The clinic is technician-led.

You will have a range of eye tests carried out by a health professional.

This clinic is by appointment only.

During your appointment

Please bring:

  • eye drops
  • distance glasses if you wear any

You will be able to drive home as we will not give you any eye drops during your appointment.

Your appointment will last up to 2 hours. The length of time will depend on how busy the clinic is.

When you arrive register yourself at the reception area.

You will be asked to confirm your:

  • full name
  • date of birth
  • address
  • phone number
  • GP details

We will ask you questions about your current eye drops.

We will check your vision with your glasses (if you wear them) one eye at a time and then with a pin hole. This is a plastic shield with small holes in it.

You will have an eye pressure check. We will ask you to put your head into a machine and air will be blown onto your eye. Make sure you keep your eyes open and do not blink. The machine will take many readings of your eye pressure.

Next we will take pictures of the back of your eye using an optical coherence tomography (OCT) machine. We'll ask you to focus on a green cross in the machine. You will see a flash when the picture is taken. Photos of your optic discs will also be taken by a special camera.

Finally you will have a visual field test. This checks the area of your vision. You will focus on an orange spot in the middle of the bowl and click the buzzer if you see any flashes of white light. You must keep your eye focused on the orange spot in the middle. You must not move your eyes although you can blink normally.

After all the tests you can go home.

You will not see a doctor on the day of your appointment.

After your appointment

A doctor will review your information and will send you a report 3 to 4 weeks after your appointment. The report will explain the results of the tests and outcome of your appointment. This will be sent by post or via the MyChart app.

A doctor will call you if there are any changes to your medicines. We will tell you when your next appointment will be. We'll also give you contact details of the glaucoma helpline if you need to contact us about your care.

Important information

Minnie Kidd House is a new diagnostic hub. Your care will still be under the same team. We aim to provide you with timely appointments, reduce waiting times and provide the best quality of care to you.

This clinic only looks at your eyes for glaucoma. Please see your local optician for routine eye tests and to screen for other eye conditions.

If you're diabetic you should also go to your appointments in the Diabetic Eye Screening Programme (DESP).

If you have any new eye problems you can also arrange an appointment with an optician who provides minor eye conditions services (MECS). Your GP can tell you how to access this service.
