Your appointment

We provide face-to-face appointments.

How to get an appointment

You can be referred by your GP, or by your haematology team at Guy's Hospital.

Please call us as soon as possible.

Before your appointment

Please arrive no more than 30 minutes before your appointment time.

If you're attending for a venesection or an exchange blood transfusion, please eat and drink beforehand.

If you're having blood tests, please make sure you're well hydrated.

Please bring:

  • a list of the current medicines you're taking

During your appointment

During your appointment you may see several members of our team.

Our administration team will check you in. Our nursing team will admit you and explain the waiting times and your treatment plan. You may also see a doctor.

Please allow up to 4 hours for your appointment, as you may have a number of tests on the day, however this can vary for each appointment type.

You may have:

  • blood tests
  • your blood pressure and other observations recorded
  • your height and weight recorded
  • a urine sample taken
  • a cannula inserted (for intravenous medications)
  • a bone marrow biopsy
  • a CT or MRI scan
  • a venesection (taking a pint of blood)
  • an exchange blood transfusion (treatment for our patients with sickle cell)

After your appointment

If you need a follow up appointment, we'll ask that you book one with our administration team before you leave.
