Diabetes in pregnancy overview

Care for pregnant women with pre-existing diabetes and for those who develop diabetes in pregnancy

The diabetes in pregnancy service is based at St Thomas’ Hospital in the Diabetes and Endocrine Day Centre, 3rd Floor Lambeth Wing.

The service provides care for pregnant women with pre-existing diabetes and for those who develop diabetes in pregnancy by a multidisciplinary team (MDT); including specialist midwifery, diabetes, obstetric, dietetic, eye and foot health input.

The team are experienced in managing high risk pregnancies for type 1, type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and the associated co-morbidities, with support from fetal medicine unit and fetal cardiology for complex cases. We provide care for women with insulin pumps and continuous blood glucose monitoring.

Screening for gestational diabetes at the Trust is in accordance with NICE Guidelines 2015.

Data on all women with pre-existing type 1 and type 2 diabetes is automatically collated for the national diabetes and pregnancy audit. If you do not wish to participate can either inform your clinician, who can remove the record from the data base, or inform NHS Digital by email, post or phone.
