Parkinson's disease and movement disorders service - information for patients

Admissions

The neurology department provides a daily neurology consulting service and is happy to review and advise on the care of inpatients who have Parkinson's disease or other movement disorders.

Patients with Parkinson's disease who are admitted to our hospitals should expect to have their medication on time and at the correct dose. If they are admitted for surgery, this may mean they are placed early on the operating list.

The POPS team (proactive care of older people who are going to have operations) will assess older patients with Parkinson's disease before surgery to identify any special care needs that they may have and will involve the Parkinson’s nurse if necessary.

Outpatient appointments

The amount of time spent in clinic will depend on who is seen and what issues need to be discussed:

  • a new patient appointment with Dr Thomasin Andrews will take about 30 minutes
  • an appointment with the Parkinson's nurse can take up to an hour
  • a new patient appointment with the neuropsychiatrist can take one to two hours.

Patients can choose to come to the appointment alone or with a family member, friend or carer.
