Same day emergency care (SDEC)

Our medical same day emergency care (SDEC) unit provides emergency care on the same day to people with an acute medical illness who need urgent assessment in hospital. We see you as an outpatient. You must be well enough and able to travel to and from our department for us to see you in the SDEC.

Conditions we assess and treat

Problems with your liver, such as:

  • abnormal liver function tests
  • jaundice (yellowing of your skin or eyes)

Problems with your nervous system, such as:

  • sudden onset headache
  • collapse
  • fainting
  • epilepsy
  • other causes of fits

Problems with your urinary tract, such as:

  • urinary tract infections (including, kidneys infections/pyelonephritis)
  • acute kidney injury

Problems with your heart, such as:

  • palpitations
  • atrial fibrillation
  • heart failure
  • chest pain (not due to chest injury)

Problems with your lungs, such as:

  • shortness of breath
  • chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • pneumonia (community and hospital acquired)
  • other lower respiratory tract infections
  • asthma
  • pleural effusion
  • pneumothorax
  • pulmonary embolism

Problems with your blood, such as:

  • anaemia
  • electrolyte disturbances

Such as:

  • diabetes

Other medical problems, such as: 

  • deep vein thrombosis
  • inflammatory bowel disease
  • infections of your skin and soft tissues (cellulitis)
  • abdominal fluid collection (ascites)
