Lambeth and Tower theatres (day surgery)

Theatres

Overview

We carry out day surgery at Lambeth and Tower theatres.

Day surgery is for people who do not need to stay overnight and makes the surgery more convenient for you.

Not all patients are suitable for day surgery. Your physical health and home circumstances will be assessed by a nurse either before your surgery date or on the day of your surgery.

Before surgery

Your appointment letter will confirm what date and time you need to arrive at the day surgery unit.

Please arrive at the time stated on your appointment letter. This allows your care team to prepare all patients on time and see you before your operation.

Please bring:

  • any medicines you're taking
  • a dressing gown
  • slippers
  • something to read

Changing or cancelling your surgery

If you're unable to come to your appointment, please let us know as soon as possible.

You can change or cancel your appointment by calling:

  • the number on your admission letter
  • our dedicated 24-hour appointment cancellation line on 020 7188 9900

What to expect

A nurse will take your blood pressure and pulse and make sure you are ready for the surgery. They will give you a gown to change into and show you where you can change in private.

The surgeon and anaesthetist will explain to you what will happen during your surgery and answer any questions you have.

You'll be asked to sign a consent form which states that you agree to have the treatment you are having, and you understand what it involves.

You may have to wait, depending on your position on the operating list. We understand that waiting might make you feel anxious so we will keep you updated, but please do ask a nurse if you are concerned.

A friend or relative can drop you off but cannot stay and wait with you. Our receptionist can take their contact number and call them when you are ready to leave.

After your surgery

After your surgery, you'll be taken to the recovery area. Once you have recovered from the anaesthetic you'll be moved to the discharge lounge within the day surgery unit to be discharged from hospital. However, depending on your procedure you may be taken to a ward for discharge.

How long you need to stay depends on the surgery you've had and the anaesthetic you were given.

All patients who have had surgery will need someone to go with them when they leave.

Our surgery appointment page has more information about leaving hospital after your surgery.
