Acute admissions ward (AAW)

Information for patients staying on the ward and their visitors

Directions: We are on the ground floor of the North Wing. From main North Wing entrance, turn left at main reception and follow signs for the emergency floor. You can access the acute admissions ward from the emergency department (A&E) entrance.

Acute admissions ward is a 57-bed acute medical admissions ward which forms part of the emergency pathway.

We take patients directly from emergency department (A&E) with a variety of conditions including cardiac, respiratory, oncology, haematology, infectious diseases, neurology and endocrine. They are often in the acute stage of their illness when they arrive with us. Our role is to stabilise these patients and assess their nursing needs. Once the patient is more stable they are transferred to another ward or discharged home if well enough.

We also have a 10-bed ambulatory care area (AAU) within the unit, which is currently run by A&E. We plan to turn one of our bays into a higher acuity area later this year for our very unwell patients.

We pride ourselves on our competence and compassion in delivering a high standard of care to the acutely unwell patient
