How do I get an appointment?
We accept referrals from patients and from friends, carers, relatives or health professionals on the patient's behalf.
Application forms are available from our clinics or your GP's surgery. You can either post/email them or bring them to the clinic in person. GPs can also book new patient appointments through Choose and Book. Please note, for a home visit, you must be referred by a healthcare professional.
If you have not received your appointment, please call us on 020 3049 7900. You can also visit your local clinic in person or email us at gst-tr.communityfoothealth@nhs.net.
-
Before your appointment
Please bring a list of any medicines that you are currently taking.
-
What to expect at your appointment
If this is your first appointment, you will be assessed by one of our podiatrists. First appointments take 20-40 minutes.
As this is a teaching hospital, students supervised by qualified staff might be involved in your care. It is valuable training for students and does not affect the quality of your treatment in any way, but please tell us if you do not want them to be present or involved. We will always respect your wishes.
-
After your appointment
Following your assessment, we may give you information about your condition, including self-care advice and leaflets. Alternatively, you may receive a short term care plan prior to being discharged from our service.
If you were referred by your GP, we will write to him/her with details about your appointment.
We will give all of our patients details of any walk-in clinics should they encounter any urgent foot problems in the future.
Emergency foot problems
You can also refer yourself to your nearest emergency foot clinic if you encounter an urgent foot problem.
Conditions that qualify as requiring urgent assistance:
- foot ulceration/open wounds
- pre-ulcer (discoloured hard skin/corns which could looked bruised or the colour of pus eg yellow, green, red or white)
- bleeding/pus in toe nails or feet
- hot/red/swollen/infected foot
- foreign body injury (eg from glass/wood/nail/needle)
Please note: routine foot problems, nail cutting and hard skin, corn and callus removals, bunions and fungal infections are not treated in the emergency clinics. Please speak to a member of our team to arrange an appointment.
The emergency foot clinic is a non-bookable clinic and patients are treated on a first come, first served basis. Unfortunately during busy periods there may be a significant wait.
Please be aware that the podiatrist may assess and advise only. Treatment is not guaranteed.
