Dental sleep

Your appointment

Your first appointment will be a video call to decide if you need treatment.

If you need treatment, we'll arrange a face-to-face appointment.

How to get an appointment

You can be referred to us from the following services:

If you have been seen in the sleep medicine clinic and need a mandibular repositioning appliance (MRA) to be remade, your GP must refer you.

Changing your appointment

Phone: 020 7188 1787

Email: [email protected]

You can change or cancel up to 24 hours before your appointment. Please give as much notice as possible so that we can offer cancelled appointments to other patients.

If you cancel your appointment with less than 24 hours notice, we may discharge you from our care.

Before your appointment

You must have had a dental check up within the last 6 months before your appointment.

If you have any dental pain, broken down teeth, decay or gum disease your dentist should treat these before coming to your appointment. You should not need any outstanding treatment.

Please bring with you:

  • the date of your last visit to the dentist
  • confirmation from your dentist that you do not need any dental treatment
  • a list of medicines you're taking

During your appointment

If you're invited to a follow-up appointment at our clinic, please let the receptionist know when you arrive.

Space is limited in the dental sleep clinic. If you have brought a friend or relative with you, they may need to wait outside during busy times.

Your first face-to-face appointment at the clinic usually lasts 20 to 30 minutes.

During the appointment, a clinician working in the dental sleep service will see you. They'll:

  • ask you questions about your medical history
  • examine your mouth and teeth
  • make dental impressions of your upper and lower teeth, as long as your teeth and gums are healthy and you do not need any other dental treatment

To be able to wear a mandibular repositioning appliance, it is important that your mouth is free of dental disease, tooth decay and gum disease.

If you need other dental treatment we cannot make the appliance and we'll ask you to see your own dentist. Your dentist will need to refer you back to us when the dental treatment has been completed.

After your appointment

We'll write to the sleep medicine consultant who referred you and send you a copy of the letter. If you need any dental treatment, we'll write to your dentist and send a copy of the letter to you.

If you need an appliance, we'll invite you back to the clinic to have the appliance fitted. We'll give you a leaflet with information about your appliance.
