Our commitment

Equality, diversity and inclusion

At Guy's and St Thomas', we are proud of our diverse workforce and are committed to making sure everyone feels welcome, included and respected.

We take this commitment very seriously, and our Trust values of caring, ambitious, inclusive guide us in everything we do.

We respect and value people's differences and stand firmly against any kind of prejudice or discrimination – whether that be age, gender reassignment, marital status, pregnancy or on maternity leave, disability, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation, and those in other vulnerable groups. Everyone is welcome at Guy's and St Thomas'.

Our diversity is essential to providing compassionate care to our patients as well as making our Trust a really great place to work.

Equality, diversity and inclusion is central to our Strategy to 2030 'Better, faster, fairer healthcare for all' which sets out our objectives to 'value all of our people' and 'improve the health of our populations' by tackling harmful health inequalities.

Our ambition is to be an organisation which:

  • values all of our people by ensuring fair opportunities, flexible workplaces and career development for everyone
  • is an inclusive workplace, working to remove barriers to inclusion and building on the commitments made in our anti-racism and LGBT+ inclusion statements and our neurodiversity strategy
  • creates equitable access to career development so colleagues who face barriers or are underrepresented have clear pathways to progress into leadership roles
  • is transparent and accountable, tracking our progress and impact to make sure our equality diversity and inclusion work leads to measurable change
  • tackles harmful health inequalities in our local communities by adapting our services to address avoidable differences in access to care and outcomes

Some examples of our recent work

We are committed to ensuring all colleagues have the support they need to thrive at work. Providing workplace adjustments that remove barriers related to disability or long-term health conditions is central to this.

We have recently carried out a full review of our workplace adjustment process, listened to those requesting adjustments as well as those facilitating them, and developed an improvement plan to make accessing support simpler and more consistent.

We have introduced new training for managers to support compassionate conversations and increase their awareness of how to use tools such as the updated workplace adjustment passport.

This work aims to help colleagues with disabilities and long-term health conditions to fulfil their potential and feel fully supported at the Trust.

As part of our anti-racism in action campaign, we have launched a series of positive action career development programmes for colleagues from the global majority.

These programmes are designed to support career progression at every stage, and aim to empower colleagues to use their skills and experience, navigate barriers and progress into more senior roles within the Trust and the wider NHS.

This initiative is funded by the Guy's and St Thomas' Charity and responds to clear evidence of racial disparities in career progression. Our workforce data shows under-representation of global majority colleagues in senior roles, lower access to non-mandatory training, and reduced likelihood of securing roles compared to white colleagues.

By investing in diverse talent and strengthening representation in senior leadership, we are working to build a more inclusive organisation that better reflects the communities we serve and improves outcomes for both staff and patients.
