Before your appointment

Please bring:

  • a list of any drug allergies
  • details of any previous diagnoses, tests or treatment already tried for your heart condition

During your appointment

You'll see one of our heart failure team. This may be a consultants, another doctor, nurse, pharmacist or a physiologist.

Please allow a number of hours for your appointment as you may have a number of tests on the day. If you're worried about how long the appointment will take, please let the nursing team know.

You may have:

  • your blood pressure, heart rate and weight measured
  • a urine sample taken
  • an ECG (tracing of your heart)
  • an echo (an ultrasound test of your heart to look at the structure and function of your heart)
  • blood tests
  • chest X-ray
  • a questionnaire relating to how your heart condition is affecting your quality of life

Sometimes, you may need to return on another day for further tests.

We're a teaching hospital. There may be undergraduate and postgraduate medical students present during your consultation.

After your appointment

We'll send a letter and treatment plan to you and your GP. If you do not want to receive a copy of your clinic letter, please let our receptionist know.

Our aim is to diagnose your heart condition and help you manage it with the ongoing support of your GP.

You may have a follow-up appointment:

  • to talk through the results of any tests
  • if the treatment you have been given needs hospital monitoring

If you have any problems after your visit, please contact the secretary of the consultant you have seen. If you have a question but not sure who to contact, please call 020 7188 4927.
